What could be the cause for a rattle or ticking sound that slows or stops when the AC is on in a 1991 Mercury Topaz?

On the air condition COMPRESSOR is an electric CLUTCH that may be making contact and noise while the a/c is off and the engine is running...when the a/c is turned on the CLUTCH engages, and the noise goes away.....good luck:)
