In secret protocols of the Molotov Von Ribbentrop pact, signed by the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany on August 23 1930, the two regimes agreed to spheres of influence for the two parties in eastern Europe, effectively carving up a large part of Europe between the two. Under the secret protocols, Russia was to get control over Finland, Estonia, Latvia and Romania while Germany would gain Lithuania and Danzig. In September additional secret protocols, however, ceded a large part of Lithuania to Russia. Poland was to be divided into three parts; Wharthland (bordering Germany) would be annexed to the Reich, almost 200,000 km2 would be annexed by Russia and the central area was to become a German protectorate. Germany began it's attack on western Poland on September 1 1939. The attack started in Danzig (today Gdansk a formerly German city in what was then Polish territory . The invasion of Denmark and Norway began on April 9 1940, the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg a month later on May 10. German troops started the occupation of France on the same day but were not fully successful until Italy attacked and declared war on June 10. The French government capitulated 12 days later. The invasion of Greece and Yugoslavia commenced on April 6 1940. Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania came under German occupation during the summer of 1941 as a result of "Operation Barbarossa launched by Germany on June 22 1941. The operational goal of Operation Barbarossa was the rapid conquest of the European part of the Soviet Union and Soviet occupied and annexed territories. While never fully successful Germany did gain control over large parts Soviet occupied territories including the three Baltic States. Monaco was actually invaded by Italy in 1943 but taken over by Germany after Mussolini fell shortly thereafter.
