Brazil is a major country that was colonized by the Portuguese. Brazil was claimed by Portugal in April 1500, on the arrival of the Portuguese fleet commanded by Pedro Álvares Cabral. The official name of the land, in original Portuguese records, was the "Land of the Holy Cross" (Terra da Santa Cruz), but European sailors and merchants commonly called it simply the "Land of Brazil" (Terra do Brasil) on account of the brazilwood trade.

However, Portugal was famous for maintaining a "maritime empire" with a number of small trading cities that were situated in Asia that Portugal would control along with a small area of environs, such as: Muscat (Oman), Ormuz (Iran), Diu (India), Bombay (India), Goa (India), Cochin (India), Calicut (India), Colombo (Sri Lanka), Malacca (Malaysia), Macau (China), and Ternate (Indonesia).
