The Murray and Darling Rivers are two separate and distinct rivers, not one. They form part of the massive Murray-Darling system, into which numerous other rivers flow.

The Murray River marks the boundary between New South Wales and Victoria, then continues on into South Australia. The upper reaches of the Darling River are in far northwestern New South Wales, and it empties into the Murray River at Wentworth, on the southwestern border of New South Wales and Victoria.
