Trying to keep out of it, on the whole. Ethiopia had been occupied by Italy in 1936-37 (which caused problems for the League of Nations). After WW2 started, Ethiopian forces combined with British troops from Sudan to try to liberate Ethiopia, Eritrea and British Somaliland. They re-took Ethiopia and Eritrea in 1941, and Britain recognized Ethiopia's independence in 1944. (Eritrea was federated with Ethiopia.)

∙ 10y agoBefore WW II the Italians had invaded Ethiopia and since 1936 occupied the country. In WW II the British invaded and together with Ethiopian freedom fighters threw the Italians out again.

∙ 16y agoEthiopia, then known as Abyssinia, was the only country in Africa which was not a part of the Empire of a European Power. It was bordered by Italian Somaliland (now Eritrea) & Benito Mussolini, Il Duce, the fascist leader of Italy was keen on enlarging Italys' Empire. The ruler of Ethiopia was Haille Selassie. The Italians invaded Ethiopia & conquered the country but were eventually pushed out by the British who moved in from Somaliland & East Africa. The Novel by Wilbur Smith 'Cry Wolf' is a cracking read, a fictional account of some of what happened.
