Ulster is not the name for any country. This is a common confusion. Ulster is a province consisting of 9 counties. 6 of those counties form what is called Northern Ireland. So Ulster and Northern Ireland are not the same.

Northern Ireland is located on the island of Ireland but is a constiuent part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (the UK).

The capital city of Northern Ireland is Belfast. Northern Ireland consists of six counties - Fermanagh, Armagh, Tyrone, Londonderry, Antrim and Down.

It is sometimes also referred to as Ulster. Ulster is one of the four ancient provinces of Ireland (Ulster, Munster, Connaught and Leinster) but is techinically incorrect as the province of Ulster also includes the counties of Cavan, Munster and Monaghan, which are located in the Republc of Ireland.

As a part of the UK, the currency of Northern Ireland is the pound sterling £, and Queen Elizabeth II is head of state.

Northern Ireland came into being in 1921 with the Government of Ireland Act 1920 which divided Ireland into Northern Ireland and Southern Ireland, however Southern Ireland only existed until 1922 and the declaration of the Irish Free State on December 6, 1922, a dominion of the British Empire.

Initially both Northern Ireland and Southern Ireland were part of the Irish Free State but the following day, on December 7, 1922, the Parliament of Northern Ireland (later referred to as a Protestant Parliament for a Protestant People) voted to opt out of the Free State and remain part of the UK. As a result of these developments the name of the UK changed from the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
