the united states owned it i wouldn't say anyone owned it before us, but if you want France started to build it but built upop a huge debt and stoped. but other then that but the united states was the first to officially own it. hope that is what you were looking for!

Panana was part of Colombia when it declared independence from Spain in 1821. Then Panama declared independence from Colombia on November 3, 1903. And Panama is proud to celebrate both dates of independence.

Spain once owned the land but then Simon Bolivar won independence and the new country was known as Colombia. The Theodore Roosevelt wanted to build a canal. Colombia said no. So Teddy sent a gunship and paid the rebels of Panama to go against Colombia and declare independence.
