Escuela Pia de Manila was established as a primary school in 1903. In 1859, the Jesuits took over the primary school and renamed it Escuela Municipal de Manila. In 1865, it became a secondary school and was renamed Ateneo Municipal de Manila, offering bachillerato and technical courses (leading to licenses/certificates). It was called an "ateneo" ("athenaeum", a name for an educational institution) because it was more than just an "escuela" (school), but not yet a "colegio" (college) or "universidad" (university).
