Miep Gies found Anne's diary, stored it away, and gave it to Otto Frank when he returned from the camps. Though initially reluctant to do so, Otto eventually decided - based on Anne's own desires, and the encouragement of others - to publish the diary.

It was ultimately her father, Otto Frank, who pushed to publish the diary, as per her desire during the war to turn it into a book once the war ended. It was then published by Contact Publishing in Amsterdam on June 25, 1947, and then an English version by Vallentine, Mitchell, and Co. in England the subsequent year.
