When ever I feel like it! No one ever knows their death date until it arrives.
(Additional Supplemental Material:)
It is generally a bad idea to speculate about your own death, although it is fairly common throughout history. Some people use a Ouija board, the intestines of animals, burned sheep shoulder bones, tortoise shells, or the movements of birds. No one is ever happy to learn when they are going to die, and many people try unsuccessfully to stop it.
Knowing about your death in advance and trying to stop it is sometimes called having "an appointment in Samarra". The expression (which is also the title of a play by John O'Hara') comes from an old story about a merchant of Baghdad, related here by W. Somerset Maugham:
A merchant in Baghdad sends his servant to the marketplace for provisions. Shortly, the servant comes home white and trembling and tells him that in the marketplace he was jostled by a woman, who he recognized as Death, and she made a threatening gesture. Borrowing the merchant's horse, he flees at top speed to Samarra, a distance of about 75 miles, where he believes Death will not find him. The merchant then goes to the marketplace and finds Death, and asks why she made the threatening gesture. She replies, "That was not a threatening gesture, it was only a start of surprise. I was astonished to see him in Baghdad, for I had an appointment with him tonight in Samarra."
Mythology and religion is rich with stories of predicted deaths:
Laius, King of Thebes, was not told the day he would day, but was told that he would be killed by his son (who would then marry his mother, Laius' wife Jocasta). Laius sent the baby far away so that couldn't happen. Predictably, he was killed by a stranger he met on the road years later who turned out to be his son.
The Norse God Odin is famous for having known the day he would die. He sacrificed himself to himself by hanging from a tree to learn the secrets of the universe, but instead he learned exactly when and how he would die.
The Buddha also sacrificed himself to himself under a tree, but he did it just by sitting there. He learned that no one ever dies but is born over and over.
Adam and Eve also gained great knowledge under a tree, but in doing this they sacrificed all of their future children.
One of their children, much later, knew what day he would die but went ahead and let it happen anyway because he knew he would come back to life forever. He was sacrificed to his Father by hanging from a dead tree and he promised that no one would ever have to die again.
In conclusion, no one should know when they die but should instead live as if each day were their last. Although only in the sense of being vigorous and determined, not in the sense of looting liquor store and denouncing your boss.
