In the United States, "Independence Day" is celebrated on July 4, and commemorates independence from Great Britain, which was achieved in 1776. Other countries have their own celebrations commemorating their own independent or established status, celebrated on the day they see fit.
The idea of Independence day was originally meant to celebrate the PEOPLE'S freedom from oppression and tyranny. It was not to be a celebration of a single nation's independence from another, but the celebration was for ALL people to celebrate the fact that ALL people are born with the right to be free from such oppression and tyranny. Every person on the planet has the innate right to be free from religious, political, financial, and any other form of oppression. Here in America, we rightfully celebrate the fact that we are a free nation. We do not celebrate because we fought off the British, but because we freed ourselves from a situation that was oppressive in nature.
