Loudness is the subjective personal perception of the ears and brain of a listener. Perceived loudness varies from person to person and cannot be measured.

You can measure the objective sound pressure or sound pressure level SPL but not the subjective loudness.

Usually, people are asking as if there is just "the" amplitude in sound waves in air.

The loudness perception of a sound is determined by the amplitude of the sound waves −

the higher the amplitude, the louder the sound.

Which amplitude of sound (sound amplitude) do you mean?

There are:

amplitude of particle displacement ξ, or displacement amplitude

amplitude of sound pressure p or pressure amplitude

amplitude of sound particle velocity v, or particle velocity amplitude

amplitude of pressure gradient Δ p, or pressure gradient amplitude.

Furthermore, think of the amplitude of the oscillation of a string.

The maximum magnitude of the deflection of a wave is called amplitude.

The source of the sound determines how loud it is. Sound is a pressure wave transmitted through a material medium the energy being released at the point of origin of the sound determines the energy in that pressure wave and the more the energy the louder the sound.

If you meant the volume of a sound then it is a decibel meter, which measures in units called decibels and is abbreviated to DB.

What determines volume.?

The amplitude of a sound wave.

The amplitude of a waveform determines the what of the sound?

Volume (loudness)

Does the frequency of a sound determine how loud it is?

No, the pressure of the sound determines it's volume.

The amplitude of a sound wave determines the sounds of what?

the strength or volume of the sound wave :)

Are higher freqeuncy sound waves louder?

No. They are higher pitched. Frequency determines pitch (the difference between the sound of a bass and a piccolo) but amplitude determines volume.

What determines the volume of sound?

The volume of a sound is measured by the sound pressure in pascals or newtons per square meter. The sound pressure level is measured by a sound pressure level meter (SPL meter).

Which characteristic of sound is associated with frequency?

We perceive the loudness of a sound wave as a consequence of its amplitude. The frequency of a sound wave determines the pitch we perceive.

What is the property of a wave that determines volume or loudness?

Amplitude of the wave decides the loudness Frequency of the wave stands for the pitch of the sound

What property of a sound wave governs its pitch its loudness its quality?

amplitude The amplitude of a sound wave determines its loudness or volume. A larger amplitude means a louder sound, and a smaller amplitude means a softer sound.

What determines the loudness of sound waves?

The amplitude determines the loudness of a sound wave.

What determines the loudness of a sound wave?

The amplitude determines the loudness of a sound wave.

What property of sound determines the pitch of a sound?

It is the frequency of a sound that determines its pitch. The higher the frequency, the higher the pitch.
