After the American Revolution he became a lawyer - whereas it took the average person 3 years to learn everything to pass the bar, it took Hamilton 6 months. He then attended the Constitutional Convention while still running his law practice. Washington appointed him Treasury Secretary in 1789, and he held that office until 1795.

After the war, Hamilton was elected be a New York's representative in the new Continental Congress. He resigned a little later to open a law office in New York. His writing of the Federalist Papers led to a creation of the constitution. Alexander Hamilton became one first constitutional attorney in the United States. He formed the Federalist Party that believed in a strong central government. He was the first United States economic adviser to President George Washington. Hamilton started the nations first bank called the U.S. Mint. He also became President Washington's Secretary of the Treasury. A believer in a militarily strong national government, Hamilton helped defeat the tax revolt of western farmers in 1794, and built a new army to oppose France in the Quasi War of 1798. He was killed on July 11, 1804 in a duel with Aaron Burr.
