Alexander the great spread Hellenism, the Hellenic (Greek) culture of the Macedonians, to all the lands he conquered, over the Middle East and far into Asia. After his death in 323 BCE, the influence of Greek civilization continued to expand over the Mediterranean world and West Asia. This was known as the Hellenistic Era.

Alexander was of the HELLENIC culture, that is Greek culture. When he conquered Egypt, the Persian Empire, and parts of the Indian sub-continent, he did not just bring soldiers, he brought Greek culture as well so what happened was the cultures of Egypt and Greece, Persia and Greece, and the Indina states he conquered and Greece, fused together to become what is now known as HELLENISTIC culture. This was one of Alexander's agenda, to create a new society of Greco-Egyptians, Greco-Persians and Greco-Indians. When Alexander died and the Empire divided by his generals, Hellenistic culture reached it's peak. Many Hellenistic kingdoms emerged, Ptolemic Egypt, The Selucid Empire, the Greco-Bactrian kingdoms on where Afghanistan is now, Indian states with Greek influences and many more. This Hellenistic culture endured until around when Agustus, Emperor of Rome, conquered Egypt and the Parthians, or Sassanids (I forgot which one) conquered the former Persian Empire under the Greeks

Alexander's aim was to 'civilise' the east. As far as he was concerned this meant introducing Greek culture, which needed the Greek city-state as its base. He founded over 70 cities in the Middle East and Central Asia, modestly naming half of them Alexandria after himself.

This culture we call Hellenistic as it was a mix of Hellenism and the local culture. It was only a partial success, as it was a superficial overlay on the upper class. The lower classes were not affected, the Persian lingua franca Aramaic remained, and Greek became the language of the upper class and of business. Jesus of Nazareth over three centuries later spoke Aramaic.

After Alexander's early death his Macedonian generals split up his empire amongst themselves and maintained the Hellenic veneer. In the outer provinces it faded and reverted/converted to different cultures. It lasted longest in the Byzantine Empire, but this too was swallowed up by the eventual Turkish takeover. Traces remain today - in Pakistan the name Sikander derives from Alexander, and Greek-speaking communities exist in Egypt and elsewhere outside peninsular Greece.

Alexander attempted to introduce Greek culture and the model of the Greek city-state as its cente. The outcome, after his early death, there was a veneer of Greek influence among the upper class, while the mass of the populations carried on their traditional cultures.
