The president was born in 1961 in Hawaii, and was thus too young to participate actively in the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s, which mainly took place in the southern United States. But he has said he was inspired by the work of Martin Luther King, and that was one of the reasons he became a lawyer and an advocate: to help minority and poor communities.

It depends on which group of people you ask. His opponents will say he has been a big disappointment: he was hailed as a great unifier, but his own words defy this logic. Such comments as "My grandmother was a typical white person", and "the police acted stupidly", show he has not been the one to bring folks together, like many thought he would. But his supporters would say that quotes such as these were taken out of context, often by his political opponents, and that a couple of awkward quotes say nothing about race in America.

One thing Mr. Obama has done for race relations is to be a role model, refuting many of the stereotypes that still persist in our society. Like him or not, he is an educated man, as well as a good husband and father. He is someone who came from a single-parent home and yet managed to graduate with honor from Harvard Law School. During his time in office, Mr. Obama has appointed many qualified Asian, African-American, and Hispanic people to important jobs (including appointing the first Latina supreme court justice); he has also reached out to communities of color so that they feel their concerns are being heard. No president can solve all the problems of race in this country, and it is a myth that just having a black president takes care of everything. Still, Mr. Obama has served as a powerful and symbolic presence, as well as a role model for many young minority kids who are inspired to see a black president and first lady.
