Columbus's first action when meeting with Natives was to run a man through with his sword in order to show his power, he then took 1,200 of them as slaves (for repayment of the loans taken to finance the journey) of which, as many as he could fit on his ships, were sold in Seville 1495.

Columbus himself was convicted in an Italian court for "barbaric acts of torture" IE: the murder of 300,000 people. After 6 weeks in prison he was pardoned by King Ferdinand.
