It's a little like taking sand to the beach, but former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice will be in San Diego on Tuesday to raise money for Meg Whitman's campaign for the Republican nomination for governor.

Whitman is hoping for a big turnout at the dinner because she really needs the money.

The gazillionaire former eBay CEO recently put another $20 million of her own money into her campaign, bringing her record-setting personal campaign spending to $59 million and counting.

Polls show her threatening to run away with the nomination. A USC/Los Angeles Times Poll released last week show Whitman leading state Insurance Commissioner 60 percent to 20 percent.

Rice returned to California after the Bush administration left office in January 2009.

She now teaches political science at Stanford University and is a senior fellow for public policy at Stanford's Hoover Institution.
