There were three colonies that settled in Connecticut that were combined under a royal charter in 1662. This unified Connecticut Colony was an English colony originally settled by the Puritans (River Colony) and combined the River Colony with the Saybrook and New Haven Colonies. The founders of the Connecticut Colony are considered to be Minister Thomas Hooker and Governor John Haynes.
