Why did David Berkowitz kill?

From July 1976 until August 1977, New York City lived in terror. Known as the Summer of Sam, David Berkowitz killed 13 young men and women and wounded another 6. When finally caught Berkorwitz claimed his neighbor's dog told him to commit the murders.

Later, after becoming a Christian, Berkowitz recanted this statement. But talking dogs or not, Berkowitz will most likely never see the outside again.

David Berkowitz, known as the "Son of Sam" killer, was responsible for a string of murders in New York in 1976-77. He was apprehended, tried and convicted of six of the murders, and is serving six consecutive life sentences in prison. He became a born-again Christian in prison, now works in prison ministry, and has stated that he fully believes he deserves to be in prison for the rest of his ife.

With the publication of The Ultimate Evil, author Maury Terry uncovered the true story of David Berkowitz and the Son Of Sam murders. Although Berkowitz has since recanted his talking dog motive, the reasons for the murders were much more frightening.

After the death of his mother and the remarriage of his father, Berkowitz was more or less adrift, with no close family to keep him a centered individual. It was at this point he became involved in a satanic cult. As 'way out' as that sounds, it really is the story behind the Summer of Sam. As a result of Terry's decades-long search for the truth, at least two bouroughs in NYC have reopened the case.
