Dolley Madison, the wife of US President James Madison took important papers from President Madison and a portrait of George Washington then fled South from the Executive Mansion before the British set it on fire. They had dinner there then set the house aflame.

As an aside, the term of "White House, became the new name of the Executive Mansion when US President Theodore Roosevelt renamed it during his time as US president.
