What did the characters in The Wizard of Oz want?

The residents of the Forest wanted to be rid of the Giant Spider. The residents of the Blue country of the Munchkins and of the Yellow country of the Winkies wanted to be rid of the Wicked Witches of the East and of the West, respectively. The Wicked Witch of the West wanted to have the Silver Shoes (Ruby Slippers) of the Wicked Witch of the East. The Winged Monkeys wanted to have the Golden Cap so that they'd have to fulfill no more commands and wishes of the headgear's wearer. And the Wizard of Oz wanted to be rid of the Wicked Witch of the West and to go back home to Omaha, Nebraska.

The Cowardly Lion wished for courage, the Scarecrow wished for a brain, and the Tin Woodman wished for a heart. Ironically, the three already had what they sought. For example, the Lion had the courage to leap over a deep, wide ditch three times. Each time he carried one of his four friends - Dorothy and her pet dog Toto, the Tin Woodman, and the Scarecrow - to safety. The Scarecrow had the brains to figure out that the ditch couldn't be jumped over by any of the five friends other than the Lion. And the Tin Woodman didn't want to hurt anybody or anything. So he tried not to step on ants.

First and foremost, Dorothy Gale wanted to get herself and her pet dog Toto back home to Kansas. In order to leave the beautiful, enchanted, magical lands and peoples of Oz, she needed to get help from the Wizard of Oz. And so she wanted to find the Yellow Brick Road, to the Emerald City of Oz. Along the way, she became friends with the Tin Woodman, the Scarecrow, and the Cowardly Lion. And so she wanted to help them realize their dreams too. In meeting with the Wizard, she learned of a heavy price tag for his services: kill the Wicked Witch of the West, according to the book; or bring back her broomstick, according to the 1939 film version. Dorothy therefore wanted to get to the Witch's Yellow Castle in Winkieland. Upon her return to the Emerald Palace, she and Toto didn't make it into the basket before the hot air balloon took off with only the Wizard on board. She was told of alternative help from Glinda the Good Witch. And so Dorothy wanted to get to Glinda's Red Castle in the Quadling Country. In meeting with Glinda, and before being transported by the secret powers of a pair of Slippers, Dorothy was concerned about the happiness and security of the three friends that she was leaving behind. And so she wanted to use the Golden Cap'sthree wishes for the friends' transportation to their respective kingdoms, and for the subsequent freedom of the Winged Monkeys.
