AnswerSome scholars say that the Book of Isaiah was written by two authors, now known as First Isaiah and Second Isaiah. Others, possibly a minority, say that there were three authors, and add Third Isaiah as well.

First Isaiah, whom we know as the Isaiah who signed his work in verse 1:1, wrote during the reigns of Kings Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz and Hezekiah of Judah. This places First Isaiah around 2,700 years ago.

There was then a break of over a hundred years before an anonymous author, now known as Second Isaiah decided to add new material to the by-then ancient book, during the Babylonian Exile. Whether he is the same author who continued to write during the early years after the Return from Exile is uncertain. Overall, Second Isaiah (and Third Isaiah) wrote for some decades, but the total is open to debate. They lived around 2,500 years ago.

Isaiah recorded his prophecies in writing, which have come down to us today as the Old Testament book of Isaiah. His prophecies cut to the heart of Judah's troubles which were rooted in idoltry and corruption due to departure from God's ways.

He also offered a way out and hope for the future. He predicted the Babylonian exile and return under Cyrus, which is the main reason scholars think there must have been another author of the book.

M. Weber (Sociology of Religion) defines a prophet as an individual bearer of charisma, who by virtue of his mission proclaims a religious doctrine or divine commandment. Weber sees two types of prophet: the first is the exemplary man who sets a personal example, represented by Buddha, and the second is one who claims to be the instrument for the proclamation of a god and his will, as represented by Muhammad. He says that the Hebrew prophets always fell into the second category.

Isaiah, son of Amos, was the author of the first 39 chapters of the Book of Isaiah. Chapters 40 to 55 were the work of an unknown author during the Babylonian Exile. Chapters 56 to 66 are post-Exilic and attributed to an unknown author now known as Third Isaiah. At some stage, the three originally separate books were combined inot a single book.

Isaiah was concerned with Assyria as the dominant power in the Levant and was concerned at the inability of the kings to react appropriately to the threat that Assyria posed to Jerusalem. The scope of Isaiah's concerns can be seen from his own statement in Isaiah 1:1, where he says that he wrote about the 'visions' he saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem in the days of Kings Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz and Hezekiah - contrary to popular Christian belief, he was not concerned with possible events in the far distant future. His book was both political, aimed at saving Judah, and religious, aimed at what he saw as the irreligious people of his time. He preached doom and punishment for the people of Judah unless they followed his advice.

The main thing that Isaiah did was to teach Torah. He was one of the transmitters of Israelite tradition in the Sanhedrin (Maimonides, introduction to "Yad") and had a school of disciples. Prophesying, and writing, took up only a small fraction of his time.

The Israelite prophets:

The Israelite prophets were extremely learned and pious individuals, both men and women, whose superlative level of piety merited them with visions from God. They had to be humble, yet speak with authority. They had to love their people, yet not hesitate to rebuke with caustic words if commanded to by God. (See: Why did the Prophets rebuke? And see: Why did some people not listen to them?)
The prophets were called upon by God to guide the people and to guide the king. While the king had authority in national matters of state, and the Sanhedrin (Sages) had say in Torah-rulings and halakha (law), the prophets spoke in matters of ethics, of belief, of loyalty to God, and behavior. They rebuked the people at God's command, they predicted events which God revealed to them, they taught through Divine inspiration, and they provided optimism and hope with the prophecies of eventual Redemption.

Some of the prophetical chapters (or books) detail Israelite history and past events, some exhort the people to improve their spiritual level, some predict events and/or warn (especially concerning the First Destruction), some serve to comfort the nation, some speak of prayer and love of God, and some speak of life, experience and wisdom.

Who is Isaiah Santiago's mother?

Why is Isaiah called the Fifth Gospel?

More than any other book of the Old Testament, the Book of Isaiah has been interpreted by Christians in an attempt to find evidence that it foresaw the coming of Jesus. Numerous passages of Isaiah have been assigned meanings considered consistent with the New Testament. These include the claim that Isaiah 7:14 prophesied the birth of a virgin and therefore, presumably, of Jesus, the Servant Songs, which now are seen as referring to Jesus, and many others.Christians sometimes refer to the the Book of Isaiah because of the allusions to Jesus that they find within it.

Who visited Mary before Jesus birth?

After Jesus' birth in Bethlehem, the shepherds were the first to visit him, according to the New Testament. The angels announced the birth to the shepherds, who then went to see Jesus in the manger.

What qualities did Isaiah possess?

A:We know about the prophet Isaiah from the Book of Isaiah, chapters 1 to 39, which were leagely written by him. Known to scholars as First Isaiah (I Isaiah) to distinguish him from the authors of the remainder of the Book of Isaiah, he was concerned with advising the kings of Judah regarding Assyria as the dominant power in the Near East. Isaiah clearly had a strong personality and was prepared to speak his mind whether or not the kings sought his advice. He was also something of a prude, railing against the practice of women of wearing jewellery and ornaments. His writings are of an intensely religious nature, with a passionate moralising tone.Because the writing as of Second Isaiah (chapters 40-55) and Third Isaiah (chapters 56-66) contain references to the Babylonian Exile and the rising power of Persia, about which Isaiah could have known nothing, he was later credited with the gift of prophecy. This became affirmed when the author of Matthew's Gospel referred to a mistranslation (LXX) of Isaiah 7:14 to show that Isaiah had prophesied a virgin birth, which Matthew said must have been the birth of Jesus.

Why was Jesus of Nazareth identified with the God of Israel?

How are the words of the prophet Isaiah important to Christians?

Mainly because he prophesied about Jesus Christ, 700 years before Jesus' birth. In Isaiah chapter 7, he told of his birth, and in chapter 53, he tells of the passion.

Did a virgin give birth in Isaiah's time?

No, a virgin did not give birth in Isaiah's time, nor did Isaiah even prophesy that a virgin would give birth. In the Hebrew Bible, Isaiah 7:14 said that "the young woman" would give birth, and the young woman in question did have a child a few verses later in Isaiah. However, the Septuagint (An early translation of the Hebrew Bible into the Greek language) incorrectly translated this to say that "a virgin" would conceive and bear a child. The author of the Gospel of Matthew relied on this mistranslation to show that it was prophesied that Jesus would be born of a virgin.

What kind of prophecies is Isaiah noted for concerning Christ?

Seven centuries before Jesus' birth, Isaiah prophesied about him: "There has been a child born to us, there has been a son given to us; and the princely rule will come to be upon his shoulder." (Isaiah 9:6) Why did Isaiah indicate that Jesus' birth and subsequent role would be so significant? Because Jesus would become a mighty ruler. He would be called Prince of Peace, and there would be no end to peace or to his princely rule. Furthermore, Jesus' rulership would be sustained "by means of justice and by means of righteousness." (Isaiah 9:7) Humans tend to look down on people of little means, even if these poor ones have performed noble deeds. This was true in Jesus' case. Isaiah prophesied about him: "He was despised and was avoided by men, a man meant for pains and for having acquaintance with sickness." (Isaiah 53:3)

How many years from 740 bc when Isaiah prophesied in 740bc to the birth of jesus in 1 bc?

It is 739 years from 740 bc to 1 bc. However, Isaiah never really prophesied the birth of Jesus. And if Jesus was born during the reign of King Herod it must have been before 4 bc, since Herod died in April 4 bc.

Who first preached Jesus coming?

When did Isaiah write Isaiah 714?

Isaiah's ministry lasted approximately 55 years, from about 739 B.C. to 686 B.C. We don't know the exact date of this prophecy, but King Ahaz was ruling. His rule was from 742 B.C. to 746 B.C. So the prophecy of the virgin birth was over 700 years before the virgin birth of Jesus.
