Joseph John Thomson, was born in 1856 in Cheetham Hill, Manchester in England.

Virtually all of his life's work was carried out in Cambridge, England.

In 1884 he became Cavendish Professor of Physics at the University of Cambridge after getting his BA and MA degrees at Trinity College, which is a college of the University of Cambridge in Cambridge, England.
