1st Experiment: He constructed a Cathode Ray and concluded that the negative charge was inseparable from the rays. 2nd Experiment: He investigated whether or not the rays could be deflected by an electric field. He found that the rays really did bend, which indicated a negative charge. 3rd Experiment: He measured the charge-to-mass ratio of the cathode rays by measuring how much they were deflected by a magnetic field and how much energy they carried. He concluded that cathode rays were indeed made of particles which he called "corpuscles." These were later named electrons. Responsible for the experiment with a pumped-out glass bulb, in which an electric circuit is completed by electrons emitted from a hot wire, is credited to the US inventor Thomas Alva Edison (1847-1931), who patented it in 1883.
