Joseph Priestly is most famous for having discovered oxygen. He also discovered other gasses and invented Carbonated Beverages (soda water) and the pencil eraser.
A Unitarian minister, his books "History of the Corruptions of Christianity" and "Jesus and Socrates Compared" had a great impact on the religious views of Thomas Jefferson, with whom he corresponded until his death in 1804. The Unitarian movement was at the time a Christian movement that viewed Jesus as human and denied the Trinity
In August 1774 he isolated an "air" that appeared to be completely new, but he did not have an opportunity to pursue the matter because he was about to tour Europe with Shelburne. While in Paris Priestley managed to replicate the experiment for others, including French chemist Antoine Lavoisier. After returning to Britain in January 1775, he continued his experiments and discovered "vitriolic acid air."
