There is a myth that Canute is famous for where one day he decided to demonstrate to sycophantic courtiers the limits of his powers by placing his throne on the seashore and ordering the advacing tide to retreat. Of course even a king could not control the elements and his feet became wet from the sea waters as they rose. Canute died in 1035AD and was succeeded as King of England by his son Harold I (Harold Harefoot).

Answer: Canute's nobles are supposed to have told him he was all-powerful. To prove that they were just "sucking up", Canute sat on the edge of the beach whilst the tide was coming in and ordered it to stop- which it didn't, of course. So with that he proved that God was more powerful then any mortal, and asked them to tell him the truth, not what he wanted to know.
