Marc Antony did not change Rome except in a left handed way. It was due to his actions that the final civil war of the republic was fought. He lost and Octavian, later Augustus, was able to gain total control and change the government from the republic to the principate.

Marc Antony was a less than average public figure in ancient Rome. He gained prominence due to Julius Caesar who was a distant relative. When Caesar was murdered, Antony happened to be the co-consul

with Caesar and he was thrust into leadership by default. He had literally ups and downs politically until he ended up as one of the triumvirs and ruled the east, with the intention of completing Caesar's campaign against Parthia. However the money to finance his army was non existent and the possibility of raising it by taxation of the provinces all but impossible as Brutus and Cassius had drained the provinces before Antony got there. So he took up with the wealthy Cleopatra of Egypt who was glad to assist him financially providing he gave her political concessions. Some of these concessions were the giving to Cleopatra territories that belonged to Rome. This is what incensed the Roman people and Octavian played it up. By his actions, Antony made it easy for Octavian to have war declared and due to Antony's poor generalship, Octavian won and was able to ultimately change the government of Rome. In a way one could say that Marc Antony was involved in the forming of the principate

or at least was a major player in the governmental change.
