It was to bring Southern style protest of non violence to Chicago in the attempt to show the racist conditions of the cites in the North specifically dealing with housing. It was a protest against racial barriers in buying real estate which was controlled by the Realtors associations and other businesses. This info is easy to find if you look for 30 minutes.
