The central teaching of Martin Luther was the belief that salvation would be granted on the basis of faith alone rather than by works. He struggled with the Roman Catholic church's demands that one could only earn favour with God through good works. Through his in-depth study of the Scriptures, he reached the realisation that salvation is a gift of God's grace, received by faith alone and by trust in Christ's death on the cross as the only means to that salvation.

Luther openly questioned the teachings of the Roman Catholic church, in particular, the nature of penance, the authority of the pope and the usefulness of indulgences. He taught that the authority of the priests were merely man made and therefore did not affect faith. In other words they were corrupting Christianity. Luther also taught that anyone could be a Christian, and they did not need to go through the priests in order to learn how to be a Christian. Salvation is attained by faith through Grace alsone, meaning all they needed was faith which one got from reading the scriptures, not following all the man-made rites and rituals of the church.

Luther is best known for his teaching of the salvation by faith and grace alone doctrine.

it's the same as one of my answer's point:

1. "men are redeemed by faith and not by the purchase of indulgences"

2. "The Bible was the supreme authority and man was only bound to the law of the word of God, not the word of the clergy"

Martin Luther believed that people should have the freedom to read the bible (it was chained to a table in the library). He was also disgusted with the corruption in the Catholic Church.
