Inspired by reports from Captain Cook's journeys, and wanting to be a sea adventurer and explorer after reading "Robinson Crusoe", Flinders came to Australia initially as an 18 year old Midshipman with Captain William Bligh in the "Providence", in 1792.
Matthew Flinders loved adventure and exploring. He was interested in mapping, and in determining whether or not the continent of Australia was a single continent or divided by either a large strait or a large gulf. Thus, he hoped to achieve a complete map of the great southern continent by completing the charting of "Terra Australis" - which is exactly what he did when he circumnavigated the continent.
