Mexican civilians ate their usual fare during the Mexican War. On December 27, 1846, during the hostilities in California, Edwin Bryant visited the home of a shoemaker in Santa Barbara. "We were very kindly received by its occupants, who, with a princely supply of civility, possessed but a beggarly array of comforts. At our request they provided for us a supper of tortillas, frijoles, and stewed carne seasoned with chile colorado, for which, paying them dos pesos for four, we bade them good evening, all parties being well satisfied." (What I Saw In California, Chapter 32.)

They often hunted, and found various animals that they skinned, cooked, then ate. They grew a few vegetables, and usually cooked them with the meat.
