Nero is one of the most underrated of Roman emperors. Of course, by ancient standards he was decadent and that was because he appeared on stage and liked art and literature rather than the military. Nero was inventive, and interested in technology. He rebuilt the city after the great fire with a strict building code and wide streets. His Golden House was a masterpiece of architectural innovation. His plans for waterways and a canal across the isthmus of Corinth were feasible, although never carried out due to his death.

Some of the terrible things Nero did were killing his mother, killing his wife and stepbrother, punishing the Christians and, in Roman eyes, appearing on stage. But he had reasons for doing these things.

Nero, although a megalomaniac in some ways, has been given a bad rap by many historians. Even the ancient historians have to admit that many things he did in his reign were beneficial. He gave the people the first of the imperial baths. He redesigned the city with safety in mind. He began to carry out his plans for two canals that would facilitate trade and transportation. He was the only emperor interested in technology and inventions. The upper class hated him but the common people loved him.
