They did not make him believe they were dead.
At first he thought they were dead when they told him that all three of them drowned on the bath tub. But then he found out they were Demigods, so Percy got into the Underworld by bribing Charon with money.

Percy, Annabeth and Tyson travelled to The Sea of Monsters. They didn't just go there to find the fleece though, they also went to find Grover who was using an empathy link to tell Percy where he was. PS: Don't you think it's funny that Grover was wearing a wedding dress?
