The Roman army firstly, had to do their military jobs such as training, cooking their food, cleaning their armor and weapons, cleaning their quarters and doing their laundry. They were also responsible for much of the policing duties in the fringe areas of Rome's territories as well as any trouble areas. The army was also the builders of Rome's roads, bridges and aqueducts. Each fort and the legion(s) stationed there was, at least theoretically, self supporting, appropriating or manufacturing their own supplies, food and equipment.

The Roman army was a multi-tasking organization. Their first job, being a army, was to win battles and conquer. However they were also the group that built the roads, the aqueducts and layed out the plans for new towns or colonies. They sometimes were responsible for policing an area and in the provinces, a unit of troops was always stationed under the command of the governor to be used as he saw fit.
