Siddhartha Gautama was a Prince in Nepal almost 2500 years ago. After his birth a wise man foretold that he would be either a great king or a great philosopher. So when his parents, mostly his father, kept him in the house and gave him everything he ever wanted, so he wouldn't leave. However this plan did not work. He left his royal palace (caste or whatever) and he wondered around seeking the answer on why people suffered, why they were sad. He believed that if he suffered as well, he would find the answer.... During the time of his search, he also helped many people who suffered. He is now known as a buddah.
Siddhartha is also known as Guatama Buddha, and he inspired the school of thought that is known as Buddhism. He was born into a royal family, but left to wander the world and find out why there was so much suffering in it. He meditated under a Bodhi tree, and after a long time became enlightened. He then began teaching others what he knew, and formed the "sangha", which is a community of spiritual seekers.
He found enlightenment and became the Buddha, and he spread his teachings (those of Buddhism) so that he could help people be free of their suffering.
