in the time of Patrick there was only one christian church - pre orthodox, reformation etc. today he is "claimed" by all christian churches as the patron saint and you will find as many protestant churches dedicated to him as catholic ones. in terms of Christianity, then, he helped spread its beliefs throughout the northern part of the Ireland in particular. he was not the first christian missionary. he himself said he was sent by the pope as a bishop to the christians of Ireland.
