Germany sweetened the deal by allowing the Soviets a free hand in eastern Europe. Germany agreed to allow the Soviets to conquer Finland and the Baltic states (Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia). The Soviets also invaded Poland, taking the eastern half of it while Germany conquered the western half.

Hitler created this non-agreesion pact so he could avoid fighting a war on two fronts. He decided to attack the western powers (Britain, France etc.) before moving on to create his "Lebensraum" in Eastern Europe and Russia. He enticed the USSR into this agreement by offering them roughly half of Poland.
