Walt Disney had a number of odd jobs in his youth. While living in Kansas City as a boy, he delivered newspapers for his father. He later worked as a "news butcher", selling drinks, candy, and fruit to train passengers. While in high school (in Chicago), Walt worked as a handyman in his father's jelly factory and held a summer job at the post office.

He soon dropped out of high school at age 16 to join the Army. The Army rejected him because he was underage. He instead joined the Red Cross and was sent to France to drive an ambulance. After returning from Europe, Walt was hired at the Pesmen-Rubin Commercial Art Studio, drawing and lettering for advertisements. It was here that he met Ub Iwerks, who would later help Walt create the iconic Mickey Mouse.

Walt and Ub started their own "commercial artist" studio, but Walt was soon hired by the Kansas City Slide Company. This was his first experience with animation. Not satisfied with the quality, he began experimenting in his garage studio, eventually creating a series of Cartoons for the Newman Theater Company. Walt called the shorts "Laugh-O-grams". He quit his job with the Kansas City Slide Company and began his own studio.
