The term would be 'Black Plague'. Modern day studies have revealed that fleas carried by rodents. The fleas bit into their victims literally injecting them with the disease.

<dai Aston> no black death is the correct term and at the time of the first plague in Britain doctors put it down to bad "HUMIDS" in the body's system humids don't exest in modern medical books as they were a creation of 14th century medicines but the correct answer for what actually did happen is the answer above

Black death is equally correct , and doctors believed in the HUMORS of the body , not HUMID. Plague is caused by Yersinia pestis, as we know now, and still exists , but most doctors were clueless then.

Why did the Black Death effect the clergy?

The Black Death had many affects on religion. Most people believed it was God punishing them for their wicked ways and would go round whipping themselves to try and please God. Nobody knew anything about hygiene and good living conditions, so they believed a lot about religion whereas nowadays we know the truth about how the Black Death was caused. However, the Black Death affected religion for a small minority as they believed in God and when the "good people" such as priests, died alongside others, they no longer found themselves believing.
