Dr. Verwoerd was the Prime Minister of South Africa from 1958 to 1966 and is regarded as one of the key architects of apartheid. He implemented policies that systematically enforced racial segregation, restricted the rights and opportunities of non-white citizens, and consolidated the power of white minority rule. Verwoerd's government also intensified the forced removals of black communities and oversaw the establishment of the Bantu Education system, which aimed to educate black students in a way that would perpetuate white supremacy.

How did apartheid start?

Apartheid started with English colonialism. It was then a 'cultural' apartheid. When SA became a colony in 1961, the white SAfrican were 'employed' as police members under English rule to enforce a "pass" system intended for blacks. The essence of this was to control access to suburban areas, the rule being if a black had no business there, he was not allowed there. This evolved into seperate development, and under Dr. Hendrik Verwoerd became very successful: Look at states created under the Verwoerd rule - Botswana, Swaziland, Lesotho and others. Townships created where proper 3 bedroomed houses were GIVEN away were many, but good examples are Soshanguve, Mabopane and many many others. Failures were Venda and Bophuthatswana. Reason for failure was corruption: To such an extent that it was considered to "import" Zulu rulers. However, Verwoerd was then killed, and the whole plan was turned upside down for political use and slander.

What were Daniel François Malan's views on apartheid?

The very term 'Apartheid' was first coined as a political term in the Afrikaner Nationalist Newspaper 'Die Burger' in 1943 to describe a policy of racial seperation and seperate development. In fact the very Newspaper 'Die Burger' was founded by Dr Malan in 1915 to serve as the mouthpiece for the newly formed National Party in the Cape region. Now Dr Malan who was the longtime leader of the National Party when they won the 1948 election running on the platform of "Apartheid". Now when Dr Malan first got into office as Prime Ministerhe didnt have any real solid ideas on how to implement Apartheid into legislation. Dr Malans only real ideas was for stricter job reservations protecting the rights of the White working class from the mass of cheap Black labour. Also the rights of White workers to form trade unions independent of company control. But besides these points he didnt have any ideas. But that all changed in 1950 when he appointed the editor of "Die Transvaler" newspaper, Dr VerwoerdasMinister ofBantu Affairs. It was Dr Verwoerd who with his own creativity and ambitionimplemented theApartheid laws into practice. You must remember,Dr Malan was a old man his late 70s while he was Prime Minister, he waslargerly a figurehead of state. Allowing his trusted Ministers to run their own affairs and gave them a free hand to establish Apartheid. Men like Dr Verwoerd, Johannes Strijdom,Theophilus Donges, Charles Robberts Swart, Johannes de Klerk, Nicolaas Diederichs, Balthazar Vorster, Jacobus Fouche and Paul Sauer were the so called "Architects of Apartheid" who created the successful system of Seperate Development in South Africa in the 1950s and 60s.
