∙ 14y agoOn the 5th of January 1066, Edward the Confessor, King of England, died. Harold Godwinson succeeded him because the English barons claimed that Edward had named him as the next king while on his deathbed.
William of Normandy had allegedly been promised the throne by King Edward when he died and so, with the backing of the Pope and some French nobility, raised an army and invaded England. At the Battle of Hastings, King Harold was slain and on Christmas Day, 1066, William I was coronated King of England.
