doctors were there to medically help whoever needed it, even though most died of infection due to non-sterial equipment. They would treat troop members suffering from lice, trench foot, mustard gas burns, or gun shots.
There were male nurses in WW1, though there was most likely less (please correct me if I am wrong). I believe at one point, just before WW1 in Australia, female nurses weren't allowed in the male ward which was where the male nurses onece worked. The rules were eventually changed so that both men and women nurses could provide care to male patients.

Most nurses in WW1 were trained in hospitals and had the occansional lectures. Majority of a traniee-nurses training was practical.
