it depends. if they were religious they thought it was a punishment from god, but if they weren't religious they thought it was bad a ir and many people burnt smelly herbs and potions to ward away the 'evil spirits'.

One theory was that the Jews who traveled from place to place brought it with them but they had built up an immunity to it.
Another theory is that the rats that came in on ships and such brought it and it easily spread to people.
