They quarantined people that were infected, moved away from cities with high amounts of people suffering from the plague, burned the infected bodies when they died to prevent it from spreading, and they use to wear masks over their noses that were filled with things like dried flowers which they believed prevented them from getting it, although this didn't really help.
At the time of the "Black Death," or the Great Plague in 1346 or 1347, the cause of the plague was unknown. Thus it seems no one knew what protective measures to take. The disease was spread by rats and their parasites, such as fleas, and from person to person. But since the populace at the time did not know the true cause, they were left with no ideas but prayer and the lashing out at imagined villains. Frightened, ignorant people attacked foreigners, beggars, pilgrims, lepers, and entire communities of Jews, whom they falsely blamed for poisoning the wells. Thousands of Jews and others were murdered. For some time the only reprieve was harsh winters, when the flea population dwindled.
Who did escape the plague? The lucky, the few immune, and those who lived away from population centers and the path of the spreading of the disease. Between a third and half of Europe's population perished from the Black Death.
Today plague control means rodent and flea control and using protective measures when in vicinity of plague carriers. Human victims are quarantined as may also be others with whom they have been in contact.
people fled there homes and some villagers blamed it on Jewish people and they were massacred. they even burned down whole city's and villages. the doctors usually wore masks and cloaks to protect them. people even punished themselves by whipping themselves because they thought god was angry at them. there are many things that they did that i just don't know of.
Back then they didn't really have anything effective to wear to protect themselves from the awful plague, but if they could get a hold of it they tried to wear big black boots, gloves, allover white greatcoats, and a protective all over face mask with a red cone on the end by the nose witch contained poseys. Like I said, this equipment was the best they could do but was not very effective, as we see today what happened during the plague.
A real tragedy it was.
Keep on asking!people tried to avoid the black death in many ways. some were quite strange, but then again it was the middle ages. some peasants would put a gold coin in there mouth, whilst others would sit in a sewer for 2 hours.
none of these theories actually worked. Then out of the blue a doctor (no-one knows his name) said that the only way to cure the black death is to swirl a bag of lavender in front of you 5 times then lay the bag on the ground and jump over it. we know that he was wrong because he died of the black death.
then a month later another doctor turned up and said that microscopic bugs were to blame. he of course was right. although he did die as well. but not of the black death, he was murdered by towns folk
