What did schoolmasters teach in colonial times?
Schoolmasters taught God and Christ Crusified until about 50 years ago in religion. In all the other subjects they where much more advanced than we are today. A farmers easy-reading back then is the most dificult reading today. Even the well educated of today can hardly read it. The national Government back then believed that the people where to be educated well enough to understand the King James Bible without dificulty.
Colonial schoolmasters were men or sometimes women who kept kids in line more often than teach them. This was not so in New England during the 1700's. They believed every child should be able to read so they could understand the bible. A schoolmaster was a man/woman who taught children how to read, write, able to recite prayers, and understand the bible
