That the US and the Soviet Union held the balance of power

Even if the Soviet Union and the US were not directly involved, the Cold War influenced decisions in both countries.

The US encouraged our three allies in the Middle East, England, France and Israel, to take action against pro-Soviet Egypt, but then refused to back them when they invaded Egypt to prevent the government of Nasser from taking control of the Canal. The Soviets threatened to send Russian troops to Egypt's aid and President Eisenhower announced his opposition and withdrew US support. The three allies cold not carry on any military action without the US. This angered our allies because we did not support them once we had encouraged them to invade Egypt.

What year did the Suez crisis end?

The Suez Crisis started on October 28 and ended on November 7, 1956. The crisis is also referred to as the Second Arab-Israeli War.

How does the Suez crisis relate to the cold war?

The Suez Canal was of strategic importance during the Cold War, even in the age of nuclear weapons. Both the US and the USSR had an interest in influencing the countries involved in the Crisis, and in keeping the canal open. So when Britain, France, and Israel attacked Egypt in 1956, the US convinced them to withdraw, rather than risk an escalation into a regional war (which nonetheless occurred 9 years later in the Six-Day War).---Global military movements require naval forces. It used to be called "military projection." Any short-cut that allows naval forces to move quicker to a designated location is of strategic importance. The Panama Canal allows naval forces to avoid the long voyage around the Southern Tip of South America. During the Russo-Japanese War in 1904-1905, the Russian battleship fleet went around the southern tip of Africa when Britain denied them use of the Suez Canal. Having the canal in Egyptian hands threatened the same type of exclusion.

Why did british occupy Egypt in 1882?

The British had three main reasons: (1) they wanted to control the Swez canal which was claimed by the French. That would give them free and guaranteed commercial passage between England and India were a great deal of natural resourses existe; (2) to put down a military coup by the Egyptian Army headed by General Orabi who wanted to remove the Khdeive Said (the king of Egypt at the time) from power. The Khedeive war a tyrant against Egypts' poor and his own soldiers while being a true friend of the French--the perrenial enemies of the British. (3) the British wanted to occupy the vast land of the Sudan with its huge natural resourses but the only way to accomplish that ws to occupy Egypt first. The British occupation of Egypt existe until Nasser in 1956 forced them to leave.
