The French navy and army saved the Americans at Yorktown. In a four day navel battle the French defeated the British navy in the bay. Their soldiers helped the Americans lay siege at Yorktown on land also. This caused the British under General Cornwallis to surrender.

After having driven off the British fleet in the battle of Chesapeake Capes, on Sept. 5, 1781, the French fleet blockaded Cornwallis' Army at Yorktown.

The American-French Army concentrated at Williamsburg and marched eastward to begin the siege of the town.

Washington commanded the right wing deploying 8,845 men and the Comte of Rochambeau commanded the left wing deploying 7,800 French troops.

On October 6 the allied siege lines were ready and the digging of the first parallel begun.

On October 9, 52 siege guns opened fire on the British defences. A second parallel

was begun on 10th and two British redoubts, which hampered the works were carried on 14th, allowing the closer emplacement of the siege guns.

Two days later a British sortie aiming to prevent the allied artillery from being placed further nearer, was beaten back.

This setback made Cornwallis aware he would have had but no hope to carry on the resistance.

On October 17, 1781 asked for an armistice and offered to surrender the town and his army.
