Some of the intelligence gathered in Pearl Harbor was done by 'tourists' taking pictures of the layout of the island. Where our military had its strengths as well as weaknesses. What weapons would be available to target, etc. One of the most fortunate events for the U.S. was simply that the Japanese did NOT have intelligence information stating that our Aircraft Carriers would not be in port.

National Geographics has an awesome thing that shows the moves. I saw it today researching (may 3, 2006) ~*~*~Chels~*~*~ Japanese posed as tourists... took pictures of the bases, ports, and took meticulous notes so the attack would hit all primary points where the US was strongest.

Two of the best bits of information are at the beginnings of Walter Lord's 'Day of Infamy' and James Bradley's 'Flyboys' ~ books. Here is a link to read as well. http://www.users.bigpond.com/pacificwar/pearlharbor/prepsforattack.HTML,

AnswerThe Japanese pilots trained intensly on attacking harbors for months prior to the attack without being told what the target was. Also, due to the shallow water in Pearl Harbor, they developed torpedoes with wooden fins that would run properly in shallow water.

All modern military forces during WWII used simulators for training. Mechanical ones, NOT the computerized simulators of today. Japanese airmen used simulators which used 4 or 6 foot long model US warships and sighted in on them with their (non-flying) simulators for practice. Then weeks before sailing for the actual attack, the airmen flew their aircraft on manuevers, dropping practice bombs and torpedos in a hidden bay, so spys could not see them.

They pretty much stayed in the Pacific Ocean and guarded Japan and its colonies and out post. The Japanese feared immediate retaliation from the US. The US Forces was far more crippled than the Japanese even anticipated and could have attacked the coast of California and launced Aerial Attacks far inland into the USA before any US forces would have been able to repel their attack successfully. Then never did try and head for the USA after Pearl Harbor because they did not want to take the risk to leave their country unguarded.

The pilots studied the terrain, and the target ships. Then they flew their aircraft and dropped practice ordnance upon simulated targets.

How long did the Japanese plan the attack on Pearl Harbor 1941?

the pearl harbor attacks occurred all throughout 1941, but even before that, it started after japan invaded Manchuria.

Why were so many ships in pearl harbor?

The origins of the tension between the US and Japan, which ultimately led to the attack on Pearl Harbor, dates back to the early part of the 20th Century. In summary: In response to Japan's declaration of war on China, which occurred in 1937, and then in 1940, further advancing their troops into northern Indo-China, the US demanded that Japan withdraw from China. Japan refused the demands of the US. In July, 1941 after Japan had refused to withdraw from China, the US, (who supplied Japan with approximately 80% its oil resources, and many of the country's other resources) imposed a complete oil embargo on Japan. This decision, and event is what triggered Japan to attack Pearl Harbor. The reason Pearl Harbor was chosen, as point of target, was, in May of 1940, the US Navy had moved its US Fleet headquarters from San Pedro, California, to Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Ironically, the move was a planned one on President Roosevelt's part, to counter Japan's increasing maneuvers and presence in the South Pacific. This decision, and the United States' under estimation of the ability of Japan's military to successfully attack the Navy's fleet at Pearl Harbor, was critical to Japan's successful plan and attack.

Who ordered the attack on Pearl Harbor?

AnswerI believe Japan's greatest naval strategist, Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto, helped plan the attack on Pearl Harbor, but also argued that the U.S. fleet in Hawaii was "a dagger pointed at our throat" and must be destroyed.
