These dialects have evolved gradually from Proto-Mayan; in the historic period of Classical Maya the languages were Huastec, Yucatec, Ch'olan, Q'anjob'al, Mamean, Quichean and Ixil. These are the languages used in Maya texts.
There are more than 30 different Mayan lanaguages.

The major Mayan language groups after that time included:
- Huastecan
- Greater K'iche'an
- Greater Q'anjobalan
- Mamean
- Tz'eltalan-Ch'olan
- Yucatecan
These groups diverged further during the pre-Columbian era to form over 30 languages that have survived into modern times. The language of almost all Classic Maya texts over the entire Maya area has been identified as Ch'olan.
