Today there are 300,000 Navajo and while most live on or near the Navajo Nation they live all over the United States. It is therefore hard to make much of a generalization. They do all sorts of professions and jobs. Of those on the Navajo Nation at least 2/3 are of have someone close to them who is involved in making art or crafts. There are many beautiful weavers, jewelers, potters, painters and writers and singers. There are still some traditional people who herd sheep and goats, and grow corn, squash and beans. The Navajo Nation has several large coal mines and oil and gas fields. So this provides some jobs. There are many people whom work in government, education and health. The tribe runs 12 businesses including the largest irrigated farm in the US and a radio station and newspaper.

The Navajo people are a very large and diverse tribe. There are 300,000 enrolled members. Most who live on the Navajo Nation today live in regular "american " style homes. Some are HUD built some self built. Some live in apartments if they have a job that provides one. Some live in trailers and double wides becuase it is very hard to get home loans when property is owned collectively by the tribe not individually. Some still live is a hogan( or have one on their property) which is a wonderfully well adapted type of home for the environment. There is a housing shortage. There is almost no housing market on the Navajo Nation.
